The correct press-on size: Why measuring is often done incorrectly
Many press-on nails don't hold, look unnatural, or come off prematurely.
The most common reason for this is not the adhesive, but incorrect sizing.
Various measurement methods are circulating on the internet – but not all of them work reliably.
⸻
Comparison of common measurement methods
❌ The Coin Method (photo of nails next to a 1€ Euro coin)
In this method, the nail is photographed next to a coin, and the image is sent to the nail designer to determine the appropriate size.
Why this doesn't work:
• "Measuring" is only possible in 2D.
• Nails differ in width and, above all, curvature, which is not taken into account.
• Even minimal deviations can lead to pressure or detachment.
➡️ Result: Press-on nails are often too small.
⸻
❌ Measure with a tape measure or paper strip
Here, the width of the nail is "unwound".
The problem:
• The measuring tape is flexible and inaccurate.
• The nail curvature is distorted.
• Measurement values differ depending on the pressure.
➡️ The result is inconsistent and hardly reproducible.
⸻
❌ Ruler or centimeter measurement
A seemingly precise method – but only at first glance.
Why even that isn't enough:
• Measures only the flat width
• Does not take lateral curvature into account.
• Ignores the natural nail shape
➡️ A press-on nail polish might fit on paper – but not on the nail.
⸻
✅ The only reliable method: Try it on.
The most precise method is also the simplest:
Try each nail individually until:
• ends flush on the sides
• exerts no pressure
• does not wobble or stick out
A well-fitting press-on nail feels light and looks like a natural nail.
⸻
Professional rule: Between two sizes?
👉 Always choose the larger one.
Why?
• more comfortable to wear
• easier to adjust
• longer hold
• no feeling of pressure
An overly large press-on can be filed down –
Never one that's too small.
⸻
Why fit is crucial for press-on nails
A correct size ensures:
• longer hold
• professional studio result
• natural look
• Fewer bad purchases
That's precisely why I focus on individual fit rather than estimation methods at The Press On Lounge.
⸻
Conclusion
The coin method, measuring tape & ruler may seem practical –
However, they do not replace a true fit.
If you want press-on nails to last, be comfortable, and look natural,
There is no way around determining the correct size.
